Poppy Cyster

Works
Overview

Poppy is a predominantly abstract artist. Her work dives into the energy she feels within the landscape of Scotland, where she is based. She often concentrates her creative imagination on the interplay between the sea and sky, making for dramatic horizon based work.

Her confident colour palette ignites her sense of wonder for the world. She uses colour to translate her emotional response to a place or period in time and prioritises the feeling of the environment above all else.

The abstraction in her work is rooted in aerial photographs which she takes herself. Having grown up in an aviation family, Poppy spent many hours during her childhood in an open cockpit biplane. This began her fascination with an aerial aesthetic.

Poppy often invites the elements into her work in a very literal sense. She uses the rain on her canvases, allowing the droplets to leave their impression within the surface layers of paint. This working practice gives a sense of realtime and looks at the cause and effect of the planet’s environment on our everyday life.

She originally studied Fine Art at De Montfort from where she graduated with a sell-out degree show and was awarded the Leicestershire Artworks collection prize.

Poppy’s work is exhibited widely in the UK and held in private collections around the world.
